Technology and It's Advantages
As David Thornburg said " Any teacher that can be replaced with a computer, deserves to be". Technology nowadays have become more advanced as we live in a century where we see the youth to elders using it to entertain, communicate, and learn for themselves. As a future educator, I would love to use the tools that I learned and apply them to my future students. It will be best suitable for students to use them since it is difficult to keep their attention and focus for over an hour.
In class, I was assigned in a group to create an evaluation on an online educational game while helping each other to discover and find new ways of presenting by combining our minds and being creative. Our first step in this obstacle was to find an online educational game that we all agreed on. As researching the world wide web, it amazed me how there is a large variety of online educational games to choose from. It was yet a challenge to find a game that would best suit our content area, to be eye catching, engaging for its audience, creative, and fun at the same time. It has continued until we were satisfied with what we have found.
As for this group assignment, we are required to create a rubric on our online educational game that we have chosen. The only part that I felt was challenging to create a rubric was to make one based an online game. As a student, I am given rubrics from teachers based on how well or bad my performance is, or something that is expected to be on my assignment. I tried to find help from my auntie who is a second grade teacher at Finegayan Elementary school, and she also had a difficult time helping me. I believe that I was over thinking the situation because we were first assigned to find an online educational game and then create a rubric. It was probably strenuous because I tried to base it on the game that we have chosen instead of having a general idea of online educational games.
" Marble Math Addition" is a game specifically meant for students in the first grade. I believe that this game is right for its content area. It provides visual and audio directions. It is eye catching and it will be fun for first grade students to be up for a challenge. As a future elementary teacher, I would use this game if and if only I was teaching 1st graders. Marble Math can be used as a practice at home and at school to help improve their performance of solving math addition problems. Everything revolves around math and it is important to start at a young age to realise we need it to know it. According to Shakuntala Devi (n.d.), " Without mathematics there's nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers."
All together as a group, we had difficult schedules to fit into each others, but we had other option such as messaging one another through Moodle. It was difficult to do it that way because not everyone will look at their messages right away. It made it hard to communicate and decide a time to practice our presentation. Although, as a group, we decided to just do a certain part to present. An option that we should have used is WhatsApp.
For our group presentation, we first decided that we wanted to use Canva because it offered a variety of designs, backgrounds, and pictures, but the majority of it that we wanted to use did not offer it for free so instead we decided to use the website called Wix. I thought that using Wix made our group presentation stand out because we did not use a PowerPoint. Creating the presentation was the easiest tool because there was a lot of themes to choose from, it was not difficult to navigate, and I thought it is a great way to create a website. Also, Wix made it easy for us to find and organize the different parts of our presentation.
My overall opinion of online educational games is that there is a large variety to choose from, but not all could be the best for your kids. Although, the usage of technology is a change of ways how students can learn and discover new things while understanding how to properly use them. As of today, technology is way more advanced that it should be used in classrooms and it should be encouraged. Also, it can replace books. Thornburg (2011) stated, "when netbooks started to appear in 2009, it became apparent that it was cheaper to buy a computer for every child than it was to fill a child's backpack with textbooks" (p.5).
