- Place computer in a family room/ classroom so computer is visible when children are using it
- Know what your child is doing on the computer by: viewing internet history, checking recent files downloaded, having the child have their own “personal” browser
- Block sites you wish for your child NOT to see
- Allow admin confirmation before downloading a file
> protecting computer:
- Install software that blocks malware & hackers from hacking chats, multimedia

Keith >Intro: What is Digital Safety and Privacy
> Research Meraki
- Digital Safety = Digital safety technically means a person's well being or safety online whether that’s on your phone, computer, or mainly the internet itself. The question we always ask, whether it's ourselves going online or our children or nieces and nephews or students, is what precautions could be taken to prevent one from any possible dangers on the internet. As we all know the internet is open to everyone, those who are nice, friendly and innocent and other people who have bad intentions or whose intentions are not so clear. And that’s one of the many reasons why it's important.
Why it’s important?
- The internet enables an amazing interchange of ideas and thoughts and there are many websites that require personal information. We can comment and share videos or photos to millions of strangers online and in truth we could care less who those people are. People with bad intentions take advantage of those situations to bully people or take personal info and much more. Cyberbullying can result in a range from mild annoyance to suicide. And personal info can be used to exploit people.
- It is our job to keep students and children's eyes open and information safe. We can show them the rights and wrongs, be aware of their actions online, provide them with tips and softwares that give them automatic safety, and self monitor their behavior online. In return this can help make things difficult for criminals or bullies online.

Online Gaming and Digital Safety
Online gaming allows you to play in real time with real people all over the world through a computer, game console, tablet or smartphone connected to the internet. Games can offer children a world of adventure to immerse themselves in, but it is crucial to understand how children can stay safe while doing so and to know what games are appropriate for their age.
DID YOU KNOW…
- Nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online. 1 in 4 has had it happen more than once.
2. 21% of people use passwords that are 10 years or older
3. The 5 most used passwords in 2014 were, 123456, password, 12345, 12345678, and qwerty
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- Find out what type of games your child enjoys and make sure they are age-appropriate.
- Some games allow you to play and chat with ANYONE in the world. This means they may come across offensive language and bullying.
- Not everyone online is always who they say they are. Be cautious and teach your children to avoid giving out personal information that could lead to identifying them and their location.
- Some games encourage players to buy extra elements during the game. Inform your children not to accept these offers. Children have been known to run up large bills unknowingly.
HOW TO KEEP THEM SAFE:
- Know what games they are playing
- Ask who they play with
- For younger children, change your settings to “airplane mode” to let them play games offline and avoid making accidental purchases or communicating with strangers
- Teach your children to protect themselves--Remind them NOT to share personal information
Teach your children to protect themselves – remind them not to share personal information and to keep gaming friends in the game only rather than adding them to their other social networks
Shekah:
Password safety
Password safety is important to remember whether or not you use similar passwords from your other accounts or the same. It is important to keep a safe and secured password from hackers of getting into your accounts. This will help reduce the risk of hackers from entering your private accounts.
- Weak Passwords:
- Using the same password for every account ( If a hacker easily got into one of your accounts then possibly they will reach the others)
- Using any of your information such as your birthday, a hobby, or a pattern from your other accounts
- Strong passwords:
- Never use the same password
- Include numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and symbols
- Use at least more than 6 characteristics
- Random passwords are the best
